The University of Findlay offers a variety of majors and minors for students to study. In fact, there are over 61 areas of study available at Findlay. The College of Business is a large department at The University of Findlay. With 11 majors within the College of Business, we have selected two specific majors to focus on and explain in detail. Accounting and Human Resource Management are two departments that students can study at Findlay. Within these majors, students gain skills and experiences to equip them to successfully work within the field. These majors vary as far as the job description, educational programs, schooling requirements, required skills, job openings, salary, fields of work, internship potential, and various other factors. Let’s take a closer look at Accounting and Human Resource Management at The University of Findlay.
Human Resource Management: The College of Business at The University of Findlay offers a lot of different majors. Human Resource Management oversees policies, procedures and compliance relating to employees for their organization. They make sure all activities are in alignment with local, state, and federal laws. These people also deal with issues about employee benefits and initiatives. They value teamwork and collaboration, which provides and offer guidance, and training as needed. This is a field that enjoys to dealing with people and helping solve conflicts. These people also like to help and communicate with others. The average base salary for Human Resource Management is $61,639; however, a lot of the income differs depending on the job title and location. Human Resource Management employees have a very difficult job because they are the individuals who hire workers for their business. There is a lot of pressure on them because they want to hire the best people to help their company make a profit. In order to become a Human Resource Management person, one must have a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management. A person may also get a Master’s degree, and there are different certifications that can help one get a certain job they want. If you are interested in being a Human Resource Management employee, general skill requirements include: organization, multitasking, communication, organization, and problem solving. This is a great field to study because there are a lot of opportunities to get internships within small and large companies. Also, Human Resource majors are in all different types of industries. There are a lot of jobs open in this department. By being a business major is extremely profitable, and Human Resource Management is a great major to choose that will lead to a variety of different opportunities.
Another major that is part of the College of Business at Findlay is Accounting. Studying for a major in accounting at the University of Findlay helps students prepare for future tasks described by All Star Directories (n.d.). Some important tasks performed by accountants include examining and ensuring statements are accurate and comply with regulations and laws, organizing and maintaining financial information, and providing suggestions that could help reduce costs, increase revenues, and improve profits. The average base salary for an accounting career is $65,940; however, it varies depending on location, experience, specialization of the field, and other factors. The specialization of the field has a major impact because there are four main types of accountants, which include public accountant, government accountant, management accountant, and internal auditor. In order to acquire any of these positions, one must obtain a bachelor’s degree in accounting. However, there is also the possibility to earn an MBA degree to earn a higher position. It is a greater demand for individuals who earn certifications to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA), especially if one desires to become a management accountant or an internal auditor (All Star Directories, n.d.).
Accounting: If you have any interest in accounting, there are some skills that are essential to be successful in the field. The following skills are needed for accounting: strong math and computer skills, attention to details, organizational skills, and problem solving skills, ability to focus, and being an analytic thinker (All Star Directories, n.d.). There are so many opportunities for internships and job openings in the accounting field, which makes having these type of skills very beneficial. Dozens of websites contain accounting internship possibilities, which also includes the University of Findlay’s Oiler Connection. The Accounting Degree Review (2012) explains that the accounting field is continuing to grow and is projected to grow by 16% between 2010 to 2020. There is an increase in demand and job openings in the accounting field due to corporate scandals, financial crises, and continued globalization of business (Accounting Degree Review, 2012). Accounting is an essential need in the business world, and it is just one of the 11 prestigious majors offered in the College of Business.
After researching and comparing Human Resource Management and Accounting, the future looks bright for individuals seeking a job position within either of the fields. If you like to keep track of things and like to follow the details, then accounting major should be a good field for you. However, if you have a good communication skills and makes a better decision based on analytical and critical skills, then human resources should be your field. Both career paths require similar skills to successfully complete daily tasks. Students studying at The University of Findlay will be equipped with the knowledge and experience necessary to succeed as an Accountant or Human Resource personnel.
