Alumni Success – B.S. Animal Science
Emily Warnimont, Professional Services Embryologist at Trans Ova Genetics in Sioux Center, IA., received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from The University of Findlay in 2013.
What made you choose The University of Findlay over other schools?
I chose Findlay because of the outstanding hands-on pre-vet/animal science program. The University also had many scholarships available to me that made school more affordable than my other choices.
Was there a faculty or staff member who was particularly supportive or who inspired you?
Dr. McCarthy was, and still is, willing to talk to me about jobs, school and different things going on within the Ag industry. He is always willing to help students achieve their goals and push them to do their best. During my job search, he was one of my references and one of the first to congratulate me on my offer. I was even able to call him to get his opinion on the job offer.
How do you think your education at UF prepared you for your career?
A lot is learned by just doing, and I feel like I was able to do that at Findlay. The most beneficial class I took pertaining to my job now was Dr. Whitaker’s Animal Reproduction class, because I deal with embryos, estrus cycles and basic animal reproduction every day. Dr. Whitaker was a great asset to me when I was preparing to interview for this position.
What do you like best about your job?
I like that I have variety every day. I’m not just sitting behind a desk or at a microscope all day. I get to interact with clients and cattle while working in the lab. The greatest thing is getting to see the whole process from start to finish; from the embryo going in to seeing the calf next spring.
What advice do you have for students making their college decision?
College is where you’ll spend the next four years of your life deciding what you want to do as an adult, so try not to base your decision on money or where your friends are going. Whether you live on campus or commute like I did, you should be active on campus. Being active will open so many more opportunities that you might not get in the classroom.
