Abels is an expert in the field of accounting. She conducts original research in the disciplines of accounting and management. Recent endeavors include examining leadership characteristics among domestic and global CEOs, governance policies surrounding domestic companies, education requirements of CPA candidates, and researching the transformation of the global corporate landscape. Abels’ recent research was published in the Journal of Education for Business, “Corporate Governance: The International Journal of Business,” “Management Research Review,” The CPA Journal and The Journal of North American Management Society, among others. She received a Distinguished Paper Award in Management by both the North American Management Society and MBAA International McGraw-Hill Irwin.
Abels earned a B.S.B.A. in accounting and finance at The Ohio State University in 1992, and an M.B.A. in business administration at Ashland University in 1997. After earning a D.B.A. in accounting from The University of Sarasota in 2006, she earned a professional Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential in 2008 followed by a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) credential in 2012. She also earned a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation in 2014.
