Fall in love with Fiona the Hippo all over again at the University of Findlay Fridays at Findlay event on Oct. 12! The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden‘s famous baby hippopotamus, with her gripping and heartwarming survival story made possible by humble human intervention, will be the star of the show. A panel of caregiving experts, who found innovative ways to keep Fiona alive after she was born six weeks prematurely, will speak in the Alumni Memorial Union at 7:30 a.m. Their talk, titled, “Giving Birth to Fiona, the Baby Hippo: A Story of Collaboration and Inspiration,” will teach invaluable lessons about the benefits of teamwork, using atypical problem-solving methods, and risk taking.
UF President Katherine Fell, Ph.D., will moderate the panel, which will also explore the integration of human and animal care, collaboration between institutions, and the magic of a great story.
Sponsored by First Federal Bank, the Fridays at Findlay breakfast lecture series is designed to encourage educational opportunities for members of the community, campus and alumni regarding best leadership practices. Admission, which includes a hot breakfast, is $10 per person and $5 for students. To register and for more information, contact Cindy Lahey at email@example.com, call 419-434-5334, or visit the Fridays at Findlay webpage.
Assisting zoo staff with Fiona’s high-risk birth on Jan. 24, 2017, and follow-up care were Cincinnati Children’s Hospital vascular specialists, who offered their expertise and even their hospital equipment, normally used to treat human patients, to ensure Fiona kept breathing and developing. Her adventure, aided by her sweet nature and camera-ready cuteness, soon attracted international attention. She continues to endear millions via news features and Cincinnati Zoo video footage. Fiona now has her own Facebook page, named The Fiona Show, which features her best video highlights. Tributes, tales and more information about her can also be found by searching #FionatheHippo.
The October Fridays at Findlay panel will feature:
- Tami Ware, Cincinnati Zoo
- Blake Gustafson, RN, BSN, BA-VC, Cincinnati Children’s Vascular Access Team
- Richard Crowley, award-winning children’s book author and illustrator of the “Marley” book series; Crowley released a book, titled “Fiona the Hippo,” in August.
Crowley will be autographing and selling copies of his book after the presentation.
The final fall 2018 Fridays at Findlay session will include Coach Ron Niekamp and a panel discussing “Building a National Championship Team: 10-Year Anniversary Reflection of UF’s 2009 NCAA Basketball National Championship.” It is scheduled for Nov. 2.
