Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) and The University of Findlay (UF) today announced that MPC has entered into a three-year contribution and support agreement with UF’s Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) Program that will fund scholarships, facility and equipment upgrades and a faculty internship program.
“This is an exciting opportunity for MPC that provides a tangible way for us to support the university’s ESOH program, which has contributed to the success of many of our employees,” said George Shaffner, MPC’s senior vice president of Health, Environment, Safety and Security (HES&S). “We look at this contribution agreement as an investment in the school and faculty, shaping the students who may one day join our company.”
The agreement outlines several key items to be implemented immediately through 2017. Highlights include: premiere HES&S internship opportunities for ESOH students at MPC; opportunities for UF faculty members to complete unique faculty internships at MPC; funding for laboratory upgrades and new equipment; funding for faculty development, scholarships and student organizations; and MPC employees to serve as guest lecturers.
“We are pleased that Marathon Petroleum has chosen to invest in our Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health Program. Many of our graduates have taken the skills they have learned at Findlay and gone on to be a part of the company,” said Dr. Tim Murphy, associate professor and chair of the Environmental, Safety and Health Management Program. “We are looking forward to strengthening our relationship with Marathon Petroleum, which allows students and employees to work together through hands-on projects and future employment opportunities. As part of the program, all of our students must have experiential learning opportunities and this is one of the ways we’re doing just that.”
The University’s Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Program enjoys nearly a 100 percent job placement within six months of graduation. “This tremendous placement rate is due in part to the internships that our students get through employers such as Marathon Petroleum,” explained Murphy. “The internships provide an excellent opportunity for the students to see and learn the practical application of knowledge that they gained in the classroom and laboratory. This funding provided by Marathon Petroleum will go to enhancing the laboratory and educational experience, and will enable students to attend national and regional conferences where they will gain additional knowledge of the profession,” he said.
