UF/Black Heritage Library Collaborate on MLK Program

April Johnson, graduate assistant for the Office of Intercultural Student Services at The University of Findlay, will provide the opening comments at a program commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, January 15. The program, which begins at 6:45p.m., at First Lutheran Church, 109 E. Lincoln St., Findlay, is a collaboration between the University and The Black Heritage Library & Multicultural Center.
A Unity Walk will precede the program, starting at 6 p.m. at the church and continuing to Dorney Plaza for a short prayer and brief reflection. Participants will then return to the church for the start of the program. Johnson will serve as emcee for the evening and keynote speaker is Andrea King, principal of Findlay’s Washington Intermediate School.
According to Almar Walter, director of Intercultural Student Services at UF, the purpose of the program is to recognize the contributions of Dr. King, a Nobel Prize winner and great American leader.
“We have always held the Unity Walk and program on Dr. King’s actual birthday, which is January 15th,” said Walter.
Other program speakers include Nina Parker, founder of The Black Heritage Library & Multicultural Center and David Emsweller, UF’s vice president for student affairs. “The Fusion,” the show choir from Donnell Middle School and the Washington Intermediate School Ensemble will perform musical selections. Findlay High School senior, Derek Gray, will present a tribute to Dr. King.
A reception with refreshments will follow the program and feature songs by The University of Findlay’s Gospel Choir.
