UF’s The Pulse Recognized by Ohio News Media Association
For its impactful work in the 2020-21 academic year, University of Findlay’s student-run newspaper, The Pulse, earned three awards as part of Ohio News Media Association’s (ONMA) 2022 Ohio Collegiate Newspaper and Best Website Awards. The awards recognize the talents of the state’s top College newspapers and their editors, writers, photographers, designers, and other staff.
“The 2020-2021 school year was a big year for The Pulse staff,” said Amy Rogan, assistant professor of communication and adviser to The Pulse. “It worked to cover the presidential election in the fall, including sponsoring a mock election for the entire campus called ‘Rock the Mock.’ Coverage included many articles on candidates, issues, and podcast interviews leading up to the event.”
The Pulse was awarded first place for Best News Coverage. ONMA Judges commented, “Great stories. Timely information. Good reporting. Nice photos. Well balanced reads.”
The Pulse took home the second-place award for Best Opinion Writing with the “Find Your Voice” columns by Alana Sundermann, to which the judges noted, “Sundermann’s decisive beliefs on civic duty blast-off with entries that are poignant and memorable. Her opinions are passionate, insightful, sensitive, articulate — stirring the reader’s heart while also challenging common convictions.”
Third-place was also awarded for Best Headline Writing for clever word play in headlines like “There’s a doe in Hendo,” a fun play on a deer getting into Henderson Dining Hall on campus.
Rogan stated, “I’m very proud of the students and their work. They write because they understand the importance of journalism and they want to serve the UF community by covering the big stories and the everyday issues college students face. It’s such a pleasure to work with so many talented students and see their passion for journalism grow.”
