Mission Work, the Mazza Museum and More: Spring ’19 Lifelong Learning Connections to Offer Several Sessions
University of Findlay’s Lifelong Learning Connections, a flexible learning experience for those age 50 and over, will begin on Wednesday, April 10.
Formerly called Senior Forum, the program is sponsored by the Office of University Advancement. Every Wednesday for three weeks, experts from UF and the community will present on a variety of interesting topics. Participants may choose their level of involvement by attending one day or all three.
Fees are $12 per day; $18 per day with lunch; or $5 per presentation. Lunch will cost $6 on the day(s) you choose.
Check-in will be at the University’s Alumni Memorial Union on Frazer Street, unless otherwise noted for off-site locations. Registration in advance is required for all field trips. Walk-ins are accepted for on-campus sessions, but if you would like lunch, you must register 5-7 days before the session you’d like to attend. The parking lot east of the AMU has been reserved for your convenience, and no parking pass will be required.

Mission Possible
Charlie Ernst ’92, M’06, University of Findlay Basketball Coach
10:15 – 11:30 a.m.
Come hear Charlie Ernst, Head Coach of the UF Men’s basketball team, share about local organization, Mission Possible, and the impact its medical mission work is making in Haiti. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and Mission Possible has been working for the past four years to improve the lives of the Haitian people one person at a time. Coach Ernst and his wife, Belinda, will accompany one of his players on a life-changing trip with Mission Possible to Haiti this May.

UF Christian Connection

University of Findlay’s religious heritage is viable and vital even today amongst the student body. Students from a variety of church backgrounds are coming to campus and seeking opportunities to wrestle with questions of faith and believing. Hundreds each week participate in worship, Bible study, and prayer. Pastor Matt Ginter, Director of Campus Ministries for the University, will share stories and pictures of student engagement. Additionally, several students actively engaged in collegiate ministry will be on hand to share samplings of worship and snippets of their own testimony.

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse … on YOU!
Amy Schlessman, D.H.Sc., D.P.T., University of Findlay Physical Therapy Department

Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, Amy Schlessman, will share a treasure trove of simple ways to combine fitness and fun with everyday recyclables. Amy holds a doctorate of Physical Therapy and Health Science and has practiced physical therapy in school-based settings for over 16 years. Her research has been published in the Pediatric Research Journal and she has also published a book, “Recycle Bin Boogie: Move and Learn with Recyclables,” which she will raffle off during the session.
Lunch: Will occur during session 2 and is provided by Ohio Logistics – No Charge
Please indicated when registering if you will be utilizing the UF transportation to Ohio Logistics and The All Hazards Center – the van will depart the AMU at 11:30 a.m.

Join Project Manager, Dave Copus, on a tour of UF’s All Hazard Training Center. The facility is designed to recreate real-life scenarios to train students how to safely respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, and work with professionals to extend their capability beyond routine safety inspections and environmental remediation practices to include prevention and response. Since its beginnings in 1986, over one-quarter million people have received instruction in a wide range of safety, security, emergency preparedness and response, and environmental management topics.

Thomas Jefferson and the Influence of History

Opening our session will be Dr. Elizabeth Buchanan of the UF History Department sharing why the past is so important for our present and future. Following Dr. Buchanan’s presentation, we will be joined by Thomas Jefferson himself! Regarded as the best thinker of his day, he became a silent member of the Continental Congress and, at age 33, drafted the Declaration of Independence. Ken Hammontree poetically portrays former President Jefferson who is known as a writer, scholar, and inventor, and for establishing the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Come immerse yourselves in the night sky and learn how UF’s planetarium is used! Steve will share about the history of the planetarium, show some constellations, talk about the programs offered, and highlight some fun and creative ways they are using the planetarium.
UF’s Magical Mazza Museum
Ben Sapp ’93, M’95, Director, University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum and Dan Chudzinski, Curator, Mazza Museum.
1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
We’ll begin with an introduction to the Mazza Museum from Director Ben Sapp, who will share the impressive news about our new STEAM addition. Curator, Dan Chudzinski will talk about his role, the different exhibits at Mazza, an exciting new exhibit coming to the Toledo Zoo, and take us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the art vault. There will be time at the end for questions and touring of the Museum while enjoying music from flutist Rachel Darroch.
