Shirley Torsell, founder of Shirley’s Popcorn, had a passion for kids and reading. Honoring her legacy, the Findlay location, 1042 Interstate Ct., will donate 100 percent of its sales on Saturday, June 11 to the Clubhouse reading program on the University of Findlay campus. Clubhouse tutors and staff will host story time, games and crafts at Shirley’s from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
According to Associate Professor of Education Allison Baer, Ph.D., the Clubhouse is the only provider of free, targeted reading tutoring for Hancock County children in grades 1-9. The program offers small group tutoring, one-on-one tutoring and the 1882 Club where participants are encouraged to read 1,882 minutes in one UF semester. In addition to providing instruction and support for school-age children, the Clubhouse also provides an authentic experience for UF’s teacher education candidates.
