The goal last year was 65,000 pounds. Can it be reached this year? The University of Findlay, in partnership with its dining service, Sodexo, are aiming for that total again for the 2016 Helping Hands Food Drive, which will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Nonperishable food will be collected from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations: Walmart at 1161 W. Trenton Avenue and at 2500 Tiffin Ave; Kroger at 101 Sixth St. and 1996 Tiffin Ave.; Great Scot, 2021 Broad Ave; and on UF’s campus at the Alumni Memorial Union on Frazer Street.
To count toward the goal, all food must be within the expiration dates and must not be damaged. Each item will be recorded in a logbook and witnessed by community and University representatives. Only food items collected on Nov. 2 will count toward the goal.
Every item that UF and Sodexo collect will be donated to Findlay’s CHOPIN Hall, a faith-based food pantry that is the primary provider of food for needy community members. The agency provides 4-5 days’ worth of food in addition to items such as diapers for children. It also provides new school supplies to hundreds of area children, and free prom dresses to high school students.
Last year’s drive, which marked the 10th anniversary, collected 64,392 pounds, which exceeded the 55,000 collected in 2013 and represented the most collected of any other Sodexo-affiliated university in the country. More than 133 people volunteered over 335 hours to collect, inspect, sort and deliver donations.
Sodexo and UF have collected 318,456 pounds of food since 2006.
