Hispanic Heritage Month – Medical and Community Interpreting: Prioritizing Informed Consent

In this Hispanic Heritage Month presentation, Dr. Attig will describe the differences between interpreting as a primarily international activity on the one hand, and as a community resource on the other. He will explore the challenges that are unique to the medical and community sector and suggest some ways in which community language professionals might adapt their practices to these unique situations. Traditional approaches to translation and interpreting focus on recreating the meaning, tone, and format of a source text into an equivalent meaning, tone, and format that is culturally appropriate in the target language. In these cases, attention to form is less important than providing all parties with the relevant information to guarantee informed consent.
ABOUT DR. ATTIG

Dr. Remy Attig is an Assistant Professor of Translation Studies & Spanish at Bowling Green State University. He grew up speaking Spanish and English and lived for over a decade in French-English bilingual contexts in Canada. He’s worked as a translator and interpreter in the US, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.
His life experience informs his interest in the way that bilingual and multilingual identities are navigated and expressed and how they are (mis)understood by monolinguals. His research focuses on the cultural production of minoritized communities across the Anglophone and Hispanophone world and the translation of these identities for the larger societies in which the speakers live.
