University of Findlay Mourns Loss of Former Acting President Louis Chenette

The University of Findlay is saddened by the passing of Louis F. Chenette, Ph.D.

Chenette came to Findlay in February 1960 to serve as an instructor in the music department where he launched a large-scale instrumental program and formed a new band and marching band in time for a spring recital and for the first football game that fall.

Chenette was very active on campus and served as Director of Planning and Research where he assisted in the preparations for accreditation and federal grant programs. He was particularly involved in the planning and construction of Egner Fine Arts Pavilion and Shafer Library, establishing the campus radio station, and sat on the committee that brought the first computer to campus.

In 1967, Chenette was named Assistant Dean of Findlay College, and in 1969 named Assistant to the President. He acted as President of Findlay College from 1971 to 1972, after which he returned to the position of Assistant to the President.

In September 1972, he left Findlay to take the position of Dean of the Jordan College of Fine Arts of Butler University in Indiana.​

In the community, Chenette was president of the public library trustees, president of the Civic Music Association, director of the choir at the College First Church of God, and a member of Kiwanis.

Dr. Chenette is survived by his wife of 71 years, Emily; five children: David, Jonathan, Nancy, Philip, and Holly; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Eugene Richard Chenette and sister Louise June Bogart.

A funeral and memorial service will be held on June 20 at North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian Street, with visitations beginning at 10 AM, and the funeral at noon. The service will be livestreamed on YouTube.
