UF Saddened by Passing of Trustee Emeritus George M. Showers
The University of Findlay is saddened to announce the passing of Trustee Emeritus George M. Showers on Thursday, July 2. George was a long-time friend and avid supporter of the University of Findlay, and was always happy to share how proud he was of it.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education, with a minor in religion from then Findlay College in 1965, he went on to have a wonderful career as a teacher, coach, superintendent, and later pastor at a number of schools and parishes in Michigan.
At the time of his passing, George was serving as the beloved Pastor for Seville Community Church of God in Elwell, MI, and is credited with helping the church grow, not just bigger in building but also in followers of Christ.
Throughout his career, his ties to the University remained strong. He joined the University’s Board of Trustees in 2006, following in the footsteps of his late mother, Pastor Ruth I. Showers, who also served as a Findlay College trustee from 1983 to 1990. He was an active member of the Board of Trustees until he was named Trustee Emeritus in May 2019.
George was also named a University of Findlay Distinguished alumnus in 2011 for his outstanding career in education and service.
In addition, George was a long-time member of Winebrenner Theological Seminary’s Board of Trustees and served on many boards for the Churches of God, General Conference. He was also a member of the Vestaburg Lions Club, Mt. Pleasant Striders Club, and served as Chaplin at many hospitals and nursing homes.
George is survived by his wife, Alice, two children, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at 1 p.m. at the Seville Community Church of God, in Elwell, Michigan.
